Providence is the capital and largest city of the state of Rhode Island in the United States of America.
It has a population of about 177,000 (2005) and a total area of 53.2 km² (20.5 mi²). The city is located in Providence County of the same name. It is the second most populous city in New England after Boston.
Providence was founded by English theologian Roger Williams, co-founder of the Rhode Island Colony. Today, the city is the economic, cultural and political center of the state of Rhode Island.
