The state has a population of 4,454,189 (as of 2017). The total area of Kentucky is 104,656 km², of which 102,889 km² is land and 1,774 km² is water (1.69%). The name is derived from an Iroquois word meaning “meadows”. Kentucky is famous for the largest cave system in the world – Mammoth Cave, which is also a national park, as well as for its horse racing.
