Topeka (in English: Topeka, pronounced Туп̀ика) is a city and the capital of the state of Kansas in the United States.
Geography
The city has a population of 122,377 (2000) and a total area of 147.6 km² (57 mi²).
It is located in the northeastern part of the state, 80 kilometers west of the city of Kansas City. It is located on the south bank (and partly on the north) of the Kansas River (a right tributary of the Missouri).
History
Topeka was granted city status in 1857.
