2016 was a big year when it comes to watches. We have selected this year’s top five news in categories: Dress, Lyxsport, hot topic, Budget and Complication and the clock we thought was this year’s fiasco.
Each year shows the watch industry off their news on one of the following two fairs: SIHH in Geneva and Baselworld in Basel. 2016 was a year when several classic models filled evenly and of all launches at the two fairs, above we have selected our five Favorites, and this year’s disappointments.
This Year’s Dressklocka- Patek Philippe REF. 5170R
Our favorite dressklocka of the year comes from Patek Philippe and named 5170R. The model has been in the range a couple of seasons but was launched for the first time in 2016 rose gold with black and silver plate. The model is equipped with Breguet-index that was most obvious feature of the Pateks consistently 2016 annual releases. Inside the 39.4 mm watchcase ticking Pateks manual chronograph movement CH 29-535 PS as can be seen through the glass back.
Black or white board? Both excellent as the year’s top dressklocka.
This Year’s Luxury Port Clock – Vacheron Constantin Overseas Ultra Thin
Category lyxsport aims at segmetet that Gerald Genta created with their classic Royal Oak 1972. There are watches with sporty aesthetics, wafer thin profile and often integrated links. Despite the fact that the Pateks model Nautilus filled 40 years was undoubtedly the Vacheron Constantin with their tribute to the model “222” that made the year’s most interesting model in the category. Produced in limited edition, exclusively in gold and with the same iconic baskaliber as the original.
Vacheron Constantin Overseas Ultra Thin makes the reasons for its name with a height of only 7.5 mm.
This year’s hot topic – Rolex Daytona REF. 116500LN
There is no doubt about which watch that became the year’s big snackis at the Basel fair in March. When Rolex steel Daytona model FINALLY launched with a black ceramic wreath went enthusiasts in spin and the clock had about a week after launching a waiting list for years with many of the dealers.
The model is really the same from the previous year but were now with Black ceramic wreath and black kronografregister. An aesthetic that flirts with the legendary reference 6263 from 70-and 80-ties.
This Year’s Budget – Seiko Prospex SRPA21 PADI Turtle
This year’s budget watch, we believe comes from Japanese Seiko and more specifically their Prospex series. It is model SRPA21 that is inspired by the company’s vintage models from the 1970 ‘s. The model is developed together with diving organization PADI whose log you can find on the Board. The watch is developed by divers, for divers and is automatic, water resistant to 200 m and costs in context only 4 800 SEK.
Seiko SRPA21 PADI is a great locking system and high visibility for your money from one of the most affordable manufacturers in the industry.
This Year’s Complication – Audemars Piguet Concept Supersonnerie
Okay first of all, we should perhaps clarify a thing. The choice of AP’s monstermodell Supersonnerie is anything but aesthetic. However, we succeeded in the feat that might produce the world’s most advanced Minute Repeater. The combination of one of the oldest and most advanced complications in a super modern design make it the year’s most interesting complication watch.
Last but not least …
This Year’s Fiasco- Piaget Polo S
The biggest disappointment was the relaunch of Piaget’s model Polo (in tough competition with Patek Nautilus 40-year anniversary). The original model, the Polo was a perfectly nice model and Piaget is undoubtedly a manufacturer I normally hold in very high esteem.
It is therefore particularly disappointing that when inside the model Polo’s which is more or less a pure fusion between Patek Philippes models Nautilus and Aquanaut. Two of the most sought-after models from the industry’s might at most revered actor.
To be inspired by other manufacturers ‘ models can happen but if it does not, in this case feels like nothing more than a transparent attempt to shoe on the popularity of someone else’s product, it becomes sadly flat case. You simply do not contribute with something new, or private. Okay to Patek Nautilus was in many respects similar to AP’s Royal Oak when it was launched four years later but it also had the natural explanation in that it was the same man who designed them.
It’s too bad for the price level is, in this respect, very good when you look at the manufacturer and its competitors. Had we instead had the courage to start from their own original Polo had this probably could have been a success.
Piaget Polo’s got during the year the unofficial nicknames NOT-illus and Aqua-NOTE on entusiastforum around the world.
